Jordan's talk for Elder Duncan

For those of you who read last weeks letter, you may have noticed that all the missionaries had to write a talk for Elder Duncan, who will be visiting Oaxaca in October.  He will then pick his favorites and have them read at zone conference.  Here is Jordan's talk.  For you non-spanish speakers, the english version follows.

La tema de esta discurso es “Que estoy haciendo ahora para ser un mejor discípulo de Cristo?”  Entonces, necesitamos saber que es un discípulo.  En la Guia de Estudio de las escrituras, dice que un discípulo es, “Un seguidor de Jesucristo que vive de acuerdo con sus enseñanzas.”  Ser un discípulo de Cristo simplemente es este, vivir como Jesucristo quiere que vivimos.  Necisitamos vivir como el nos enseña en las escrituras.  Juan  8:31 dice, “… Si vosotros permaneciereis en mi palabra, sereis verdaderamente mis discípulos.”  Necisitamos guardar todos los mandamientos y siempre hacer cosas que sabemos que Jesucristo mismo haría. 

Al final de cuenta, es muy fácil ser un discípulo de Cristo.  Yo espero y creo que todos nosotros como misioneros están guardando los mandamientos, y que estamos viviendo como Jesucristo nos enseño.  Entonces, si estamos haciendo este, somos discípulos de Jesucristo.  Pero nosotros, especialmente nosotros porque somos literalmente representantes de Jesucristo, necesitamos ser mas que un discípulo de Cristo en este manera.  Ya debemos saber que necesitamos guardar los mandamientos,  necesitamos vivir como Jesucristo esta a lado de nosotros.    Porque los discípulos de Jesucristo durante su vida, eran sus misioneros también, sus discípulos eran sus Doce Apostoles.  Piense por un momento en los Doce que Jesucristo llamo para ser sus discípulos mientras El ando en la tierra.  Ellos, curaron personas que estaban enfermo, ellos sanaron los que eran afligido con demonios, ellos también hicieron milagros.  Ellos, antes y después de Jesucristo murió, fueron a muchas partes del mundo para predicar el Evangelio.  Ellos salieron de su trabajo, salieron su de su familia, casa, dinero, y TODO para ir con Jesucristo, y para predicar.  ¿Suena familiar?  Espero que si, ustedes han salido de su trabajo, casa, familia, dinero, y todo, para ser misioneros aquí en Oaxaca.  Quizas ustedes no han hecho milagros tan maravilloso como los Apostoles, pero ustedes están realmente en el mismo trabajo, y haciendo las mismas cosas que los Apostoles de Jesucristo hicieron.  Este es la importancia, y grandeza de la obra que estamos haciendo.  Nosotros necesitamos ser discípulos de Jesucristo para hacer este obra, pero como es un discípulo de Cristo?  No solo es guardar los mandamientos, pero es hacer las cosas que los apóstoles de Jesucristo hicieron, tenemos que ser como ellos.

Pero, ¿Cómo eran los Apostoles de Cristo?  Ustedes ya saben, ellos no eran perfecto, pero ellos siempre estaban dispuestos a hacer las cosas que Jesucristo los mandó.  Cuando estaban pescando y Cristo vino a ellos, los apóstoles inmediatamente salieron de su barco para ir con El.  Ellos tenían la humildad necesario para aceptar cuando ellos no eran correctos.  Ellos aceptaron el corregimiento de Jesucristo, y cambiaron su vida y pensamientos para estar en acuerdo con El.  Muchos de los apóstoles dieron su vida por la predicación del Evangelio.

Entonces, ¿Cómo podemos llegar a ser mejores discípulos de Cristo?  Necisitamos ser como los apóstoles.  Cuando un líder en el misión dice que estamos en error, en cualquier manera, sea con reglas o otra manera.  Necesitamos  tener la humildad a aceptar la corregimiento hemos recibido.  Y necesitamos hacer las cosas que el Líder nos ha dicho.  No importa si este líder es el Presidente de Misión, un asistente, un Líder de Zona, un líder de Distrito, o aún su compañero mayor.   También ustedes líderes necesitan aceptar el corregimiento de otras misioneros, sea misioneros con mayor posiciones o con posiciones menores, nadie de nosotros es libre de errores.

   

También, podemos leer en DyC 103:28 “ Y el que no esté dispuesto a dar su vida por mi causa no es mi discípulo.”  ¿Estamos dispuestos a dar nuestros vidas por esta obra y por el causa de Jesucristo?  Yo sé que ustedes ya están pensando que si.  Ustedes ya piensen que si algo pasó, y tuvieron la oportunidad a escoger vivir o morir por causa de Jesucristo, ustedes escogerían morir por Jesucristo.  Y yo creo en sus pensamientos, yo creo que cada uno de nosotros escogeríamos morir por causa de Jesucristo.  Pero, este no solo significa que necesitamos sentir listos para morir, pero dar nuestras vidas.  ¿Cómo debemos dar nuestras vidas?  Necesitamos esforzarnos a obedecer cada punto de las reglas que tenemos como misioneros.  Podemos decir que necesitamos ser como los fariseos, solo sin la hipocresía.  Soy uno de ustedes, y sería como los fariseos, hipocresía y todo, si no dije que este es fácil.  Yo sé que levantar a 6:30 es muy difícil, sé que es difícil a entrar en una casa que tiene una televisión prendido, y pedir una persona apagar la televisión.  Hay un buen de reglas que tenemos, algunos son mas difíciles que otras, pero necesitamos seguir todos.

Si no obedecen todos los reglas, si no obdecen los mandamientos, si no somos como los apóstoles de Jesucristo, no somos los discípulos de Cristo.  Y no podemos cumplir con la escritura en DyC 1:4 “La voz de amonestación irá a todo pueblo por boca de mis discípulos, a quienes he escogido en estos últimos días.”  Ustedes ya han sido escogido de Cristo, mediante un apóstol y el profeta, para ser una boca en estos útimos días, solo necesitamos ser discípulos.

No es tan fácil ser discípulos de Cristo cuando recordamos que los primeros doce apóstoles de Cristo son nuestros ejemplos de como es un discípulo de Cristo.  Pero es posible, obedecen los mandamientos, obedecen las reglas de la misión, tienen la humildad necesario, y actúan como ustedes son los Doce apóstoles de Jesucristo, y ustedes serán discípulos de Cristo.  Ustedes serán las manos del Señor aquí en Oaxaca.

No soy perfecto con estas cosas tampoco.  Pero yo sé que si yo me esfuerzo para hacer las cosas que he dicho, aunque son sencillas, yo tendré la gran oportunidad, y responsabilidad (porque ciertamente es un gran responsabilidad), para ser un discípulo de Cristo.  Sé que voy a tener la promesa que puedo actuar en el nombre de Cristo para hacer milagros como los apóstoles hicieron.  Sé que voy a poder hablar con la autoridad con que Jesucristo mismo habló.  Y sé que ustedes también pueden hacer milagros y tener estas promesas.

Yo digo estas cosas en el nombre de Jesucristo, Amen. 

The theme of this speech is "What am I doing now to become a better disciple of Christ?" So we need to know who is a disciple. The Study Guide scripture says that a disciple is, "A follower of Jesus Christ who lives according to his teachings." Being a disciple of Christ is simply this, to live as Jesus wants us to live. Wanting to live as he teaches us in scripture. John 8:31 says, "... If ye continue in my word, you are truly my disciples." Wanting to keep all the commandments and always do things we know that Jesus Christ would.

After all, it's easy to be a disciple of Christ. I hope and believe that all of us as missionaries are keeping the commandments, and we are living as Jesus taught us. So if we are doing this, we are disciples of Jesus Christ. But we, especially us because we are representatives of Jesus literally, we need to be more than a disciple of Christ in this way. Now we know that we need to keep the commandments, we need to live like Jesus is next to us. For the disciples of Jesus Christ during his life, were also missionaries, his disciples were his Twelve Apostles. Think for a moment that Jesus called the Twelve to be His disciples while He's on earth. They healed people who were sick, they healed those who were afflicted with demons, they also performed miracles. They, before and after Jesus died, went to many parts of the world to preach the Gospel. They came out of their jobs, left their family, home, money, and everything to go with Jesus Christ and to preach. Sound familiar? I hope so, you have left your job, home, family, money, and all to be missionaries here in Oaxaca. Maybe you have not done miracles as wonderful as the Apostles, but you are really doing the same job, and doing the same things that the apostles of Jesus did. This is the importance and greatness of the work we are doing. We need to be disciples of Jesus Christ to make this work, but as a disciple of Christ, not only is keeping the commandments, but to do things that the apostles of Jesus did, we have to be like them.


But how were the apostles of Christ? You know, they were not perfect, but they were always willing to do the things that Jesus Christ commanded. When they were fishing and Christ came to them, the apostles immediately left their boat to go with him.  They had the humility to accept when they were not correct. They accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ, and changed their life and thoughts to be in agreement with him. Many of the apostles gave their lives for the preaching of the Gospel.So how can we become better disciples of Christ? Wanting to be like the apostles is one way. If a leader in the mission says that we are in error, in any way, either in rules or otherwise, we need to have the humility to accept the disciplin we have received. And we need to do things that the Leader has told us. No matter whether the leader is the President of Mission, an assistant, a zone leader, a district leader, or even their older partners. You also need to accept the district leaders of other missionaries,  or missionaries of more junior positions, none of us is free of errors.

 
 Also, we read in D & C 103:28 "And who is not willing to give his life for my sake is not my disciple." Are we willing to give our lives to this work and for the sake of Jesus Christ? I know you already think so. You already think that if something happened, and had the opportunity to choose life or death because of Jesus Christ, you would choose to die for Jesus Christ. And I believe in his thoughts, I think each of us would choose to die for the sake of Jesus Christ. But this not only means that we need to feel ready to die, but to live. How should we give our lives? We need to strive to obey every point of the rules that we as missionaries. We can say that we need to be like the Pharisees, only without the hypocrisy. I am one of you, and be like the Pharisees, hypocrisy and all, if I did not say that this is easy. I know to get up at 6:30 is very difficult, I know it's difficult to get into a house that has a TV on, and ask a person to turn off the television. There are a rules we have, some are harder than others, but we need to obey them all.If you do not obey all the rules, if your not obedient to the Commandments and are not like the apostles of Jesus Christ, we are not disciples of Christ. And we can not meet the D & C 1:4 saying;  "The voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days." You have been chosen in Christ, through an apostle and prophet, to be a mouth in these latter days. We just need to be disciples.


It is so easy to be disciples of Christ when we recall that the first twelve apostles of Christ are our examples of  a disciple of Christ. But it is possible, to obey the commandments, obey the rules of the mission, have the humility necessary, and act like you are the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and you will be disciples of Christ. You are the Lord's hands here in Oaxaca.


I'm not perfect with these things either. But I know that if I strive to do the things I've said, though simple, I'll have a great opportunity, and responsibility (it is certainly a great responsibility), to be a disciple of Christ. I know I will have the promise I can act in the the name of Christ like the apostles did. I know I will be able to speak with the authority with which Jesus himself spoke. And I know that you too can perform miracles and keep these promises.
